We all know company brand slogans that we immediately identify with particular products. “It’s the real thing” immediately brings to mind a popular fizzy drink; or “Just Do it”, which identifies a particular brand of casual wear. Closer to home, we have, over the years many slogans that will help us identify certain brands: “Where the Nation Shops and Saves”; “Clearly The Best”;  “Nyore Nyore, Zimbabwe Furnishers” being a few of the more memorable ones.

An organisation whose activities affect many of us came up with one of these slogans a few years ago and from the first time I saw it, I have tried to understand what message they were trying to convey. I will not mention its name for now to see how many can identify this organisation simply by its slogan.

DRIVEN TO MAKE YOU DRIVE WELL!

What does that even mean? They are driven. In other words they feel a strong desire or compulsion to do something, but what is it they feel so strongly about? To MAKE us drive well? Even if they could, they are clearly failing because not many people in Zimbabwe drive that well and for an organisation that feels so compelled to make people drive well, I have not seen any thing that suggests that they are worried about the state of driving on our roads. No posters extoling drivers to improve their driving; no fliers, nothing. Just a slogan on their vehicles and billboards telling us that they are so driven.

In any case, I don’t think that they have the mandate or the capability to MAKE anyone do anything. (The only organisation with such a mandate and capability, The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) appear to have forgotten that they have a duty to enforce the laws of the land!) We pay toll fees to them but that is not because they make us; it is because the government promulgated a law that says we should pay toll fees. The Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (or is it Authority), (ZINARA) is an organisation whose existence and usefulness is still a mystery to me. They collect money at toll gates and for licenses for all road users, so that, I am told, roads can be fixed. First though, they need fancy offices, a board of Directors and an administrative structure that I imagine takes up a significant portion of their collections, which may explain why, after so many years of their existence, the state of our roads continues to deteriorate. Yes, they have tinkered with a couple of roads for show but at this pace, they will never catch up. And because they are driving their new cars on such bad roads, they will need to replace them soon, further delaying any spending on the actual roads!

Anyway, I do not believe that the slogan is conveying the message that they meant to communicate. Perhaps they wanted to tell us that they are driven by the desire to make our road network so good that it will be a pleasure for us to drive. That is merely speculation on my part. Nothing they have done so far suggests anything of the sort. So what is it they wanted to convey?

A recent visit to their offices seemed to provide the answer, at least for me. Judging by the number of luxury cars that are in their parking lot and that one sees driving in and out, They (ZINARA officials) certainly drive well. So perhaps it is their sign writer that made a mistake. The slogan should read:
